Jeep's Rock-Trac 4x4 System: Off-road King | Jeep Canada

JEEP'S ROCK-TRAC 4X4 SYSTEM: A WELL-KEPT SECRET

2021-03-03
Jeep has become a master in the art of offering vehicles capable of venturing off the beaten path. The brand offers an array of 4x4 systems , as it would be wrong to believe that one system can serve everyone's needs.
In the case of the Rock-Trac 4x4 system, it is found with the most competent off-road versions of the Wrangler and Gladiator models: the Rubicon. The system is made up of several elements found with other systems, but also has the characteristics that make it unique. Here's how this system is deployed.

A Combination of Systems

The magic of the Rock-Trac 4x4 system lies in the fact that it brings together a set of features that make nothing stand up to it when driving off-road.
First of all, it's important to know that it's possible to drive in two-wheel drive mode (2H) where the power is sent to the back. Up to a speed of 89 km/h, it is possible to switch to the 4x4 (4H) model for increased grip. The 4H model ensures an even distribution of power between front and rear, i.e., 50-50. It is recommended only on surfaces such as ice, rock, dusty roads, heavy rain and snow.
There is also what is called a braked differential, the BLD system for Brake Lock Differential. Active in 4H and 4L (low range) modes, it offers better traction when negotiating rough terrain or when climbing rocks. This device acts much like a locking differential. Its mission is to ensure that both wheels of an axle rotate at the same speed. If one wheel slips, the system will distribute the torque equitably to the other wheels so that balance is restored. In short, it allows us to enjoy maximum grip at all times.

And when the Tru-Lok electronic locking differential system on a Rubicon model is in action in the back, the BLD system remains functional in the front. If the Tru-Lok system is also activated in the front, the BLD system is no longer required.

Low Range

Where the Rock-Trac 4x4 system shows us what it's capable of is when you put the vehicle in low range (4L). First, it features a heavy-duty transfer case that offers a high gear ratio of 4:1, the magic number for any off-road enthusiast. This makes it possible to drive with confidence over rough terrain. With the manual gearbox, a ratio of 73:1 allows you to drive at a slow and steady 0.8 km/h to overcome obstacles.
Add to that the Rubicon's a disconnecting front sway bar for maximum wheel articulation, and you have a set of features that make the Rubicon a good choice for tackling areas where other vehicles need to stay behind.
